Where Is The Cloud?
This is a featured blog from Frontline Solutions Architect, James Robertson.
‘Cloud’ is a bit of a buzzword at the moment and there’s a lot of confusion surrounding exactly what it means.
In the most basic terms, the cloud is just a metaphor for the Internet. It’s a way of storing or accessing your data or programs over the internet instead of on your local computer’s hard drive.
Once you break it down like that, there’s nothing scary about cloud computing at all – most people have probably been using it for years without even noticing!
At Frontline we have our very own datacentre at our offices in Handforth. For a monthly fee we can host your servers, websites, software (and anything else), as well as monitoring, supporting and backing up all of those things. Hosting takes away a lot of the pain and worry of traditional on-site IT, especially for smaller companies without a dedicated IT person or limited IT resources.
As well as the obvious benefits of not having to purchase the hardware or software outright, there are a number of costs not always associated directly with IT spend that are reduced when hosting your IT environment.
Frontline provide all the power, cooling and environmental monitoring for your equipment. We run everything with hardware high availability and have UPS backup as well as generator cover. The site is manned 24/7 and is fully secure with CCTV and secure access to the datacentre.
This massively reduces a business’s IT overheads as those expensive air conditioning and power units in your server room can be retired and there is no need for expensive on-site IT support.
There is also no need to worry about backups as Frontline will back up all your data, as well as running it off to a tape and storing this securely offsite – this can also form the beginning of a Disaster Recovery strategy for your business (we’ll talk about this more in a future blog).
