What is disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS)?

Hurricanes hardly ever happen in the UK. Earthquakes likewise. So there’s no need for businesses to worry about disaster recovery, right?

Wrong, of course. Because an IT outage is perhaps the biggest threat to the smooth running of any business. And when it happens it’s generally a non-natural disaster – just as likely to be caused by a software or system failure as by fire, flood or the roof blowing off.

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS for short) is an umbrella term for a range of ways to back up applications and data in the cloud. The most effective form of protection from the very real danger of a sudden, catastrophic loss of access to your data.

Be Godzilla-ready

What distinguished DRaaS from other protection strategies is that it’s a total system backup; a secondary, parallel infrastructure, located far away from your site, that you can switch to immediately while the primary system is fixed.

So when Godzilla lays waste to your premises (and it’s only a matter of time) your business can keep on running without interruption.

Is DRaaS the same as BCaaS?

Disaster Recovery as a Service is sometimes confused with BCaaS (business continuity as a service). In fact people sometimes think they’re two different terms for the same thing. It’s more accurate to say that BCaaS is a bigger concept, and DRaaS is just one aspect of it. DRaaS just protects applications and data, whereas BCaaS covers everything it would take to keep a business going in the event of a disaster, even the relocation of workers.

Who is DRaaS for?

DRaaS is applicable to any business with some or all of its IT on the premises. But it is particularly suitable for small to medium sized organisations, because they are less likely be able to afford a permanent backup location. A monthly fee for DRaaS is a much more practical proposition.

DRaaS main features

DRaaS solutions vary and can be tailored precisely to your business by an expert provider such as Frontline. But the main characteristics of a typical system are:
• Your vital resources will be mirrored in multiple locations, so continuity is assured even if one of the storage sites is destroyed by Godzilla’s rampaging brother.
• Your system is backed up, not just your data. That makes switching over to your reserve resources much quicker and simpler.
• Compatibility with any system. Because it’s a suite of solutions rather than just one, the expert Frontline team can create a bespoke solution that works with your set-up – whatever the platform and whoever the vendor.
• Comprehensive or selective. If only some of your data requires backup, we can offer a flexible, lower cost solution
